Reducing the proportion of young people not in education, employment
or training (NEET) is one of the Department's key priorities and
is particularly important in the context of raising the participation
age.
Reducing the proportion of young people NEET is therefore both
a priority at a district and national level. The national target
is to reduce the proportion of 16-18 year olds who are NEET
by 2 percentage points by 2010. BRadford Council and its partners
have a lead responsibility for reducing the proportion of young
people NEET in the the district and this is reflected in the
Local Area Agreement (LAA).
The latest national figures show that nationally 189,500 (9.4
percent) 16- to 18-year-olds were NEET at the end of 2007, a
reduction from 210,000 (10.4 percent) at the end of 2006. When
broken down by age, the proportion of 16- to 17-year-olds NEET
fell from 8.2% to 7.2% in this period, and 18-year-olds NEET
from 14.7% to 13.7%. The reduction in the proportion of 18 year
olds NEET is particularly welcome given that it is the first
reduction for 3 years.
NEET Targets for 2008 aim to reduce the number of:
1. 16 to 18-year-old NEETs from 10.4 per cent (2005)
to 9 per cent (2008)
2. care leavers who are NEETs from 45 per cent (2005) to 33
per cent (2008)
3. year 11 students who fall into the NEET group
from 7.4-7.9 per cent (2005) to 6.9-7.7 per cent (2008)
