Crime & Safety
Building safer and stronger communities remains a challenging and exciting agenda for the Council and its partners and is central to the regeneration of the district. Tackling crime and fear of crime is essential in making areas attractive as places in which to live, and low crime rates impact positively on the district's ability to attract and retain new investment. Between 2002 and 2006 the Bradford district achieved excellent reductions across most aspects of the crime domain.

In 2003/04 the district achieved the second highest reduction in volume crime in England and Wales. Since then, overall crime has continued to fall. In 2006-07, there were nearly 9,000 fewer crimes recorded than in 2003-04. Whilst over the past two years overall crime has remained more or less stable, the figures for 2006-07 do show an increase on 2005-06 of 2.6% to a total of 36,756 crimes. Reducing crime and re-offending, and protecting the public are critical activities. Reducing re-offending contributes to the safety and quality of life of those who work and live in this region. Fear of crime affects many people and needs to be taken seriously. Although most people have, statistically, a low chance of becoming a victim of crime; many people fear it.
